Last Wednesday, October 7, Ryan Lewis, Catherine Pitney, Lynn Setzer and Lisa Scott from our Charlotte team spent a shift at Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina. It was our second time there this year.
The work is simple. Cans come off the pallets, go into boxes, and the boxes go out to pantries, shelters, and schools across the region. We stood at a folding table in the warehouse and packed until the stacks ran out, then started on the next pallet.
Most of what we do in property management happens in someone’s home. The people we house are our neighbors, and a lot of Charlotte families are one bad month away from choosing between rent and groceries. A box of canned vegetables doesn’t fix that. It does take one bill off the table for a week, and that matters to the household getting it.
Thank you to the Second Harvest staff, who had stations set up and instructions ready before we walked in, so we were packing within minutes. We’ll be back.
If you want to put in a shift yourself, Second Harvest posts open volunteer slots at secondharvestmetrolina.org.
